Prof. Dr. Peter W.G. Groot Koerkamp (man) (H‐index Web of Science: 29) is professor in biosystems engineering and managing chair holder at the Agricultural Biosystems Engineering Group of Wageningen University. He has an MSc in agricultural engineering (with honours) and a PhD in environmental engineering. He has supervised 21 PhD (13 running) and he published 74 scientific papers. He is past-president of the Dutch and European Society of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers, and organiser of the EurAgEng2018 conference in Wageningen. He has more than 30 years of experience in waste management studies on livestock manure and its losses and aerial emissions, and a unique track record in interactive and interdisciplinary design (RIO) of environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and welfare friendly animal and plant production systems and food chains (106 refereed journal papers in WoS).

Robotization is the next step in automation of agriculture and precision agriculture. First successes are reported, but both practical, societal as well as scientific challenges are persistent. How can engineering and technology contribute to the societal challenges we face and successfully develop towards technology readiness level 9, full widespread practical application?
